Nell Merlino, founder and CEO of Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence

Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence is a non-profit company that strives propel economic growth by giving female entrepreneurs the resources and capital necessary to achieve success. Nell Merlino, the founder and CEO of Count Me In, seeks to empower women so they “realize that there is a path for business growth.”

She points out in an article in Icosa Magazine, “that women tend to be less aggressive than their male counterparts when it comes to networking, and sometimes they don’t believe in their power as the majority in the business world.” By giving women the tools and knowledge that they can, in fact, succeed, Merlino hopes to increase the percentage of female entrepreneurs who earn over $1 million in revenue, thus increasing the number of jobs in the economy and boosting the overall community development.

The Swell Season and The Frames: One Swell Concert!

Last night, one great friend invited us to see The Swell Season at Oakland’s Paramount Theater. Not only was the venue amazing but the concert blew us away!

They played with The Frames (Glen’s original band). Here’s a Frames track that Swell Season also played in their debut album, so you may get a feel for what we experienced.

The best World Diabetes Day ever!!

These are photos from last night’s World Diabetes Day event at the Ferry Building here in San Francisco. After an amazing Big Blue Test in the course of the day, the event lighting up the building in blue with a great attendance by about 50-some people touched by diabetes really made yesterday the best World Diabetes Day ever!

Se Fueron Los Compadres

Los Compadres just left. :)

¡Los extrañaremos muchisimo Compadres! La pasamos genial. Se les quiere cantidad.

Dreams Do Come True

Here we were: a little over five years later, sitting in the same restaurant in San Francisco, next to The Mosser, remembering how we were dreaming back in December 2002 of living in San Francisco.

Today, we live in the Bay Area, so that dream has come true… Here is a little video I put together after the occasion, to celebrate life!

Relocating to Palo Alto?

Since I had to go through some research and asking around myself, I figured it would be useful to others in the future to share the resources I used to find a place for your family in Palo Alto (or the San Francisco Bay Area at large), get to and from work and, assuming you have kids, factor in the school district in your decision.

HOUSING
Unless you have a TON of money sitting in the bank, chances are you will be renting first. Rent in the Bay Area is very expensive, but it is not impossible to find reasonable deals.

Everyone will tell you the best resource you can use is Craigslist and they are right. However, there are other resources that complement it very nicely:
-Housing Maps: a very nice mashup combining Craigslist data with Google Maps. If the Craigslist listing does not contain the exact address it will not show up on Housing Maps, though.
-Google Base Housing: This is a beta product from Google that sort of looks to emulate what Housing Maps does but based on Google’s own data (indexing others sites or based on listings people post on Google Base). Not as complete as Craigslist, but worth using too.
-ApartmentRentHunterz: In spite of its name, this site focuses not only on apartments. It covers all of California.
-SF Gate: The online home of the San Francisco Chronicle is another great resource. Listings outside of San Francisco will be limited, though.
-CitiApartments: This is a good resource if you want to live in San Francisco. You can commute using the 101 (tons of traffic, but up to you) or CalTrain.
-Metro Rent: Another good resource if you want to live in San Fran. The main annoyance it has is it requires registration in order to show you the most important information.

TRANSPORTATION
If you plan on commuting to/from Palo Alto, besides Caltrain, these resources main come in handy:
-BART: Bay Area Rapid Transit District, or the subway if you prefer. Too bad it doesn’t go all the way to Palo Alto, but it stretches well around the bay.
-Muni: San Francisco Municipal Transport Agency, which manages the buses, trolleys, etc. inside the city.
-Besides public transportation, if you live relatively close to your work, Palo Alto is very safe to walk or bike.

EDUCATION
If you have children, you will want to look into schools too before you choose where to move.

For starters (credit to Andreina for this one), check out Great Schools. It will tell you all you want to know about all schools in the area you are looking into.

Other useful resources for Palo Alto education are:
-Palo Alto Daycare & Preschools: this is a listing from SanFrancisco.com -one of the most comprehensive lists I found during my preliminary searches.
-Palo Alto Unified School District: all public schools in the Palo Alto area are listed here.

There you have it. Hope this list of resources is useful if you are planning to move to Palo Alto. If you have any additional advice, please share it in the comments.

Manny Moving to San Francisco, To Work For Ning

By now, some of you have heard the news.

I will be leaving Full Sail soon. Starting Jan. 15 I will be starting at a new position in the heart of Silicon Valley, surrounded by some true legends of the Web industry, helping others create and develop social networks at Ning.com. Ning is the platform that powers TuDiabetes.com, in case you are unfamiliar with it.

This will make Jan. 4 my last day at Full Sail.

At the same time that I am happy for this new opportunity (and this you can believe to come from the bottom of my heart), part of my heart is sad to leave behind such a great team of people.

I have been in Full Sail since July 2003. This is the longest time I have been in any job in my life (thanks in no small part to the Internet bubble that burst a couple of times in my face!)

I have grown not only in years while at Full Sail: I’ve grown as a manager, I’ve grown my understanding of web products, and most important of all, I’ve grown in friends.

Now, I look forward to working in Ning, helping others accomplish what we have done in TuDiabetes.com and continuing to develop as a professional and a human being.

Today and the days up to Dec. 5, we are in the Bay Area, looking the place (or at least an area where that place will be located) that we will start calling home soon. Any tips are welcome! :)
