Cell phone gets a new lease on life

Yesterday, in an action that I cannot yet explain, I dropped off my cell phone in a glass with water. I guess the only explanation is that I thought it was empty, and I had no open “places” to hold it in while driving, so it “made sense”… needless to say the poor thing started to fade away, as a hologram loosing power would and the screen would not respond, etc.

I dropped by a Sprint store to discover that the warranty that the phone had (go figure!) obviously didn’t include cases like the one I had experienced (when do they?) so I was basically in a position where I had to talk it out with Customer Service and get back to them (them being the folks that send you a brand new phone when things go wrong with yours).

I was reading what other people have done in cases like this, and I did most of what they say: I shook the unit vigorously as soon as it happened and pulled out the battery after a while (I didn’t do it immediately). The result: this morning, a miracle occurred and it was working again. I am going to keep it quiet so as to not jinx it, though.

I promise: I will never put my cell phone in a glass of water again! :)

iTV: an interesting product… even before its launch

Last night, after I took some time to watch the whole keynote Steve Jobs did about all the new products: pretty amazing stuff, if you ask me. I thought it was interesting the fact that he talked about iTV, which hasn’t yet been released.

The reason it’s not out yet (commented my friend Danilo) was because they are waiting for the new 802.11n wireless standard to be approved (something that is not expected for another 6-9 months) in order to release “iTV” with support for higher speeds and more immunity to interference, etc., something that the current 802.11g standard would have not achieved.

In any case, this still doesn’t answer one question I had after I watched his presentation: how is the video FROM the iTunes store, which will be made available in 640×480 format going to NOT look pixelated on a large screen when broadcasted via “iTV”? Any takers?

On a side note, but still related to the Apple’s announcements yesterday, I learned today that the new very, very cool iPod Nano ad was creatively directed by a Full Sail grad called Jayson Whitmore. Check out the video. It’s VERY cool, indeed!

Logitech MX Revolution: throw your mouse away!

In the best style of Engadget, I decided to share my comments about the new Logitech MX Revolution mouse, which I had the chance to take for a spin this past week.

I never imagined I could get excited about a mouse. Actually, I haven’t felt this excited about a mouse since I got my first optical mouse (not having to periodically clean that mouse ball meant a lot!) The truth is that from the moment I took the MX Revolution out of the box I knew I had something way more special than a conventional mouse in my hands. Now, after a few days of continuous use, I know that feeling was true. So, what makes it so special?

A cordless mouse may not sound as much, but if you consider that this mouse is rechargeable too, that may score a few more points with you, since you have to just leave it charging overnight as you see a need for it and there’s no more need to worry about batteries! (plus less waste too).

If cordless and rechargeable are not features that rank high with you, how about ergonomy? The MX Revolution fits your hand like a glove. It has a side wheel perfectly positioned to help you navigate through applications (substituting the need for the Alt-Tab hotkey) right by your right thumb. Also nearby you find two convenient slim buttons allowing you to navigate back and forth through your browser’s history. Not too far, you have a nice “search” button you can program (like all buttons and wheels in the mouse) to speed up your web searches through Yahoo! or Google.

Not satisfied yet? Here’s the big one! Scrolling like you’ve NEVER seen before. As fast as you’ve dreamed of being able to scroll up and down lengthy documents. Just click on the scroll wheel on top of the mouse and the typical step-by-step movement of the wheel makes room for what feels like a wheel with NO friction. Slide the wheel fast enough and you get to the bottom of your documents in a split second (I mean it!)

So, am I excited about this mouse? You bet! The $100 price tag is more than justified: this is no average mouse. The MX Revolution is a computer performance booster dressed in mouse outfit!

Nike and iPod: The Cool Factor + Google Spreadsheets

Two of the world’s most respected brands and also two of the world’s best looking products join hands in a pretty cool solution to a problem you may have not known you had.

Nike and iPod join hands for a pretty nifty idea: an iPod Nano that “talks” to your Nike running shoes. These are fitted with a sensor that feeds back to the iPod, giving you real time information about your jog… Cool, huh?

Well, it gets better. Once you are done, you dock the iPod and download the profile of your run into your machine, etc.

“Where do you want to go today?” seems the question you may be getting from one of these setups some day soon. ;)

Microsoft: where are you, by the way? Are you catching wind of any of this?

……..

Talking about Microsoft and some of their other competitors, Google released today a limited release of Google Spreadsheets. Here’s a sneak peek (you gotta sign up for it, to play with it).

I heard today that it doesn’t support some of the “hardcore” formulas and charting Excel does. But we know it will only be a matter of time until it does… and then, bye-bye to overpriced Microsoft products. It’s compete to beat your oponent and price wars. It will get SO interesting.

Metered Dose Caffeine Inhaler: safe and swift…

I just found out about this amazing gadget. It saves you all the upset stomachs and potential for ulcers that result from drinking tons of coffee while it wakes you up in the same way that a cup of java or two do. Buzzaire it is called, and it saells only for $12.99. It includes 1 inhaler and 2 cartridges, each of which has 100 doses, so you will even be saving money, while you are saving your liver. How’s that?

Happy April Fool’s Day!

Not Viagra! CABRA!

Earlier this month, I was very excited because I had ordered my Awesome, once you can get it to get along with the PPC-6700
Should I blame Microsoft for it? Some friends think I should…

I bought the Jabra BT250V to go with my PocketPC-powered Sprint PCS PPC-6700. Jabra.com indicated that this device would work with all Bluetooth-enabled devices, and after I set it up, it did… for a while. When my Jabra and my phone stopped “seeing” each other, I resorted to “rebooting” the Jabra.

Believe me: this was the weirdest reboot I’ve ever seen in my life, like “Clap your hands, hit the table, turn around, and bam!” That did it… for a couple of hours. Again, my Jabra and my phone wouldn’t come to terms with each other.

Eventually, a couple of reboots of the phone did it, and now the two devices “happily” get along with each other. Who knows for how much longer, though?

Would I get another Jabra? I may, if I had to. But if I had to tell you about getting it for this phone, I am not so sure. Whether it is the Microsoft platform or the device it runs on, the end result is the same. Getting the Jabra to talk to my PPC-6700 phone has been one of the least plug-and-play experiences I’ve had in a very long time.

No Viagra: Jabra!
